IN THE NEWS

Ron Matta could move to Key West, Fla., and spend his days sipping pina coladas but instead he chooses to spend his time “fighting City Hall.”
Matta continued to show City Hall that he will not go away when he announced this week that he will run against Mayor Linda Balzotti in next year’s election.
“I see what’s being done here,” said the 69-year-old lifelong Brockton resident. “This city is a mess. It’s going in the wrong direction and I just can’t leave it.”
Matta ran against Balzotti for mayor last year but the incumbent won with nearly 75 percent of the vote.
Since then, Matta has spent his time challenging the Brockton city government on issues including the budget, the Aquaria Water desalinization plant and the “debacle” of the city’s Water Department billing.
This year, Matta is getting the word out early so voters will know what he stands for and so they will come out to vote.
“My No. 1 priority is making this city safer and getting more police officers out on the streets,” he said.
Increasing public safety is one of the keys to Matta’s five-point plan of how he plans to point the city in the right direction.
The plan also includes bringing in an outside firm to audit the city’s finances, privatize the Brockton Rox stadium and re-evaluating both the desal contract and the structure of the City Council.
“I was raised in this city and it used to be the greatest city in the world to live in,” he said. “Brockton has always been where my heart is and I want to make things better for the people here.”
